That was the last flying dream I ever had. Until last Thursday. Reclamation In my dream, I once again have an audience, and I am doing swimming strokes through the air. I feel the support of the air under me, and I stay airborne for minutes at a time. What power and freedom! I want everyone around me to discover this joy! This time I choose to let the dream take its natural course. And when I wake up, there is no trauma or disappointment. As I watched the movie several things made me stop and think about how hard some of them had it growing up. In the beginning of the movie, I learned that 90% of deaf people have hearing parents. Then only 10% of those parents who have deaf children even learn sign language. Then to top it off only 1% of those parents are fathers. I feel that most people who have deaf children, feel like there is something wrong with their child. When in reality the only thing is their hearing. It tells the story of the blue-skinned Na’vi, inhabitants of an alien planet called Pandora, who are attacked by a group of humans from Earth. Eventually, the human protagonist Jake Sully turns against his own people and helps the natives defeat the invaders. The idea of a white supremacy is especially conveyed in Avatar through the white protagonist Jake Sully. At the beginning of the movie, Neytiri, who is the Na’vi tribe leader’s daughter, introduces Jake to the rest of her people, explaining that she did not kill him due to a sign by their God Eywa (Avatar, 00:45:45). Thus, the viewer is left with a feeling that Jake must be special for some reason, which is further supported due to his immediate integration into the tribe. Although Jake is supposed to be the alien, who only just landed on Pandora, he makes fast progress and is soon able to climb and hunt like the natives. He learns their language and is eventually considered one of them. Meanwhile, Jake falls in love with Neytiri, and the two of them engage in a relationship (Avatar, 01:24:50), even though she was originally promised to a Na’vi man. In addition, Jake is the only one who can ride the dragon-like bird Toruk (Avatar, 01:53:32), a performance that only five people managed to do before him (Avatar, 01:18:26). In summary, Jake is portrayed as superior to the indigenous people since he is easily able to outdo the Na’vi in all areas of life. Despite the movie being fictional, the Na’vi resemble stereotypical images of real ethnic groups. Susana Loza observes that â€Å"[t]heir [†¦] nearly naked blue bodies are [†¦] decorated with Maori tattoos and Maasai-style necklaces and beaded jewelry. Their long, dark hair is adorned with feathers and either worn in mohawks or dreadlocked† (54-55). Thereby, Loza suggests that the Na’vi combine different elements of minority cultures in their appearance. One example is Neytiri who wears a stretched ear piercing, which is common in many African cultures. Likewise, David Brooks notes that â€Å"[t]he peace-loving natives – compiled from a mà ©lange of Native American, African, Vietnamese, Iraqi and other cultural fragments – are like the peace-loving natives you’ve seen in a hundred other movies†. His point is that indigenous tribes are often portrayed in stereotypical ways and that this stereotypical representation also applies to the Na’vi, who are depicted as illiterate savages living in close touch with nature. For instance, they frequently use animal-like noises or hissing sounds, making them appear rather primitive. Moreover, it is noticeable that the actors who play the main Na’vi characters are all people of color (Birkin 31). All of this contributes to the impression that the Na’vi are not a completely fictional tribe, but they are indeed a composition of existing minority cultures. Even more important is that Avatar draws on the genre of a white savior film. â€Å"The ‘white savior’ film [†¦] centers on a white protagonist whose main role [†¦] is to rescue peoples of color from outside invaders, from inside threats, and from themselves† (Bausch 914). In Avatar, the Na’vi need Jake to save them from the attack of the other humans. Without his assistance, the tribe is completely helpless and naà ¯ve. For example, the Na’vi try using bows and arrows to fight against flying tanks (Avatar, 01:38:55), or they sing and pray instead of creating a plan to defeat the enemy (Avatar, 01:53:00). Only when Jake joins their army and provides them with mechanical weapons and a strategy are they finally able to defend themselves. Hence, Jake is portrayed as the white savior of non-white people who are apparently incapable of handling problems themselves, which is an idea that is clearly offensive towards indigenous people. All in all, Avatar reinforces the common notion of Whites being superior to other ethnic groups by producing stereotypical impressions about race. However, Avatar is no exception since the topic of the white savior comes up in several movies (cf. Bausch 914-918). These kinds of movies provide white viewers with the chance to identify with the (apparently) good-hearted white people, while being able to distance themselves from the violent doings of their American ancestors. Although people commonly consider themselves to be tolerant and open-minded, Avatar serves as an example which suggests that we must still be careful with hidden racism in ‘white savior’ movies. After 9/11, however, US officials realized that terrorist organizations could use the Internet to generate more bloodshed (Weimann, 2004). Al-Qaeda, for instance, could launch missiles or biological weapons to the US by simply pressing the â€Å"Enter† button of a laptop (Stohl, 2006). To a certain extent, the fears of the US were well-founded. In November 2000, an electronic attack was carried out from Pakistan against the Washington-based pro-Israeli lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Aside from defacing AIPAC’s site with anti-Israeli commentaries, the attacker likewise stole some 3,500 email addresses and 700 credit card numbers, sent anti-Israeli diatribes to the addresses and published the credit card data on the Internet. The Pakistani hacker, known by the alias â€Å"Dr. Nuker,† claimed responsibility for the incident. It turned out that â€Å"Dr. Hacker† was a founder of the Pakistani Hackerz Club, an organization whose objective was to â€Å"hack for the injustice going around the globe, especially with (sic) Muslims† (Conway, 2002). The aforementioned cyber assault was not without precedent. The Lebanese Shiite Islamic group Hezbollah established its collection of web sites in 1995. At present, the group has three websites that can be viewed in either English or Arabic – one for its press office, another to describe its attacks on Israeli targets (http://www. moqawama. tv) and a third, Al-Manar TV, for news and information (http://www. manartv. com). These websites regularly provide the latest information about Hezbollah, including press statements, political declarations, photos, video and audio clips. An email address is also provided as contact information (Conway, 2002). After 9/11, as a result, federal agents issued subpoenas and search warrants to almost every major Internet-based company, including America Online, MSN, Yahoo! and Google. In addition, many web sites were subjected to official closure by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Included among those that were closed down were radical Internet radio shows such as â€Å"IRA Radio,† â€Å"Al Lewis Live† and â€Å"Our Americas. † The â€Å"jihad web ring,† a collection of 55 jihad-related websites, lost dozens of its sites due to pullouts by Yahoo! Lycos Europe, meanwhile, created a 20-person team to filter its websites for illegal activity and terrorist-related content (Conway, 2002). Cyber-terrorism: Is There Really Such Thing? One of the most common arguments against cyber-terrorism is that it is an imaginary threat (Lacey, 2007). Contrary to popular perception, there is a minimal chance that cyber-terrorists would exact harm on innocent people by attacking corporate and governmental computer networks. As of this moment, terrorist organizations use the Internet only for fundraising, communications and propaganda. There is the possibility that terrorists might use computers as weaponry to a significant degree, but this will â€Å"probably happen in the (distant) future† (Conway, 2002). At present, terrorists would draw more attention to their cause by setting off bombs instead of hacking bytes (Conway, 2002). Instead of getting extremely paranoid about cyber-terrorism, the government should instead focus on eliminating cyber attacks against companies. As of July 2002, hackers had successfully launched at least 180,000 Internet attacks against more than 400 public, private, governmental and non-profit organizations. The brunt of these attacks fell on the power and energy industries, as well as on the technology and financial services. If left unchecked, these cyber attacks would be very detrimental to consumers – in order to make up for their losses to hackers, owners of the above-mentioned industries will have to raise the prices of their products and services (Fishman, Jospehberg, Linn, Pollack, Victoriano, 2002). Conclusion Paranoia over cyber-terrorism is very dangerous. Aside from diverting attention from more serious crimes such as cyber attacks, it violates civil rights and liberties. Under the guise of â€Å"fighting terrorism,† even websites whose only crime was to express radical ideas were closed down. While it is the duty of the state to safeguard its constituents from danger, doing so should not infringe their inalienable rights. It is true that terrorism might turn to cyberspace in the future in order to spread even more fear and bloodshed. But before the government rushes out to eliminate â€Å"cyber-terrorists,† it must first have a clear-cut concept of what constitutes cyber-terrorism and what makes a cyber-terrorist. We are yet to grasp the full reality that Australia is a pluralistic, multicultural, multi-religious society in which among people of different traditions and with indigenous people is a requirement of social cohesion. Globalisation has influenced the growth of eastern religions and new age fads in Australian society. Migration has led to an increase in the number of religious adherents in non-Christian faiths such as Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism and Hinduism. Hinduism has grown exponentially since 1911 at 189%, followed by Islam at 69%, and Buddhism at 48%. Atheism or citizens who have no revealed any religious affiliation has risen due to scientific advancement, rise of secularism, immigration and births. Along with this there is renewed interest in and awareness of Indigenous spirituality. Due to the ‘pluralistic, multicultural, multi-religious society’ of Australia, multi-faith dialogue is important for the cohesion and harmony of Australian society. Sometimes tensions between religious traditions or against a particular religion result in violence or discrimination. To illustrate this point, ignorant and prejudiced media portrayals of Muslims have encouraged anti-Islamic attitudes and stereotypes despite the peaceful religious teachings of the Koran. Dr Ameer Ali (President of Australian Federation of Islamic Councils) recognised that interfaith dialogue was essential to ‘understand each other’. Similarly, Archbishop George Pell believes that interfaith dialogue must be established to maintain currently peaceful relationships before potential hostilities have a chance to escalate. In 1964, Pope Paul VI recognised the need for interfaith communication, stating that; â€Å"We do not wish to turn a blind eye to the spiritual and moral values of the various non-Christian religions, for we desire to join with them in promoting and defending common ideals in the spheres of religious liberty, human brotherhood, education, culture, social welfare, and civic order. Dialogue is possible in all these great projects, which are our concern as much as theirs and we will not fail to offer opportunities for discussion in the event of such an offer being favourably received in genuine, mutual respect. We readily accept the principle of stressing what we all have in common rather than what divides us. This provides a good and fruitful basis for our dialogue, and we are prepared to engage upon it with a will. â€Å" Multi-faith dialogue assists in keeping peace and social unity in society, especially with organisations such as the NSW Council of Christians and Jews who recognise their common heritage in order to promote understanding and combat anti-Semitism. They organise activities that include an annual Passover demonstration directed to non-Jewish audiences, panel discussions and seminars on current subjects of interest, multi-denominational evenings for poetry and music, Holocaust education and an annual Christian commemorative service for the Holocaust held in the crypt of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral. Along with interfaith dialogue between Christians and Jews, the NSW Council of Christians and Jews also seek to broaden the interfaith relations with Islam in particular. Some past interfaith activities in Australia include the 2001 Anzac Day service at St. Mary’s Cathedral for Buddhist Monks and Christian Ministers, Centenary of Federation celebrations in Melbourne, Prayer services at Martin Place by the Muslim-Christian Council for peace in Indonesia, Prayer services for September 11, Asian Boxing Day Tsunami and Bali bombings. As Dr Gerard Hall says, in the current ‘global world, our national identities in no way preclude our responsibilities for the well-being of all humanity and the one earth we share’.
